The adoption of vehicles has experienced a significant decline both statewide and in Mumbai over the past year, attributed to the impact of the lockdown. According to the Economic Survey report for 2020-21, the total number of vehicles in Maharashtra has reached 3.86 crore, reflecting a modest increase of 2.3% compared to the previous year, which had seen a 6.6% rise. Similarly, Mumbai has witnessed a slowdown in vehicle growth, with a mere 2.7% increase, in contrast to the 7.2% surge reported in the preceding year.
As of January 2021, Maharashtra’s vehicular population has reached 3.86 crore, marking a 2.3% rise from the 3.77 crore vehicles recorded in January 2020. Among these, two-wheelers constitute the largest segment, totaling 28.34 lakh vehicles across the state.
In Mumbai, the current count stands at 3.96 crore vehicles, indicating a 2.7% increase from the previous year’s figure of 3.86 crore. The city’s two-wheeler count of 22.53 lakh represents the highest number of motorized transport mediums, followed by 12.26 lakh cars. Despite accounting for over 10% of all vehicles in the state, Mumbai’s share in the total number of cars in Maharashtra is notably higher, with 12.65 lakh cars and taxis making up 22% of the 57.61 lakh such vehicles present in the state.
